Creating Happy workSpaces - How to adapt your home without leaving the BUILDING or spending a penny by Louise Wolfenden

Having a pleasing space to work could make all the difference to your wellbeing and productivity during this difficult time.  Research conducted by the Happiness Research Institute states that happiness is not about what you do, or how much you earn, but how content you are with your home….. given we are now house bound, I believe it is now more important than ever!

I have created several mini workspaces/ makeovers over the last 2 weeks at my own home and here I want to show you how easy it was and hopefully inspire you to have a go yourself.

Overnight, as a country, we have been forced to adopt a flexible working approach which may be completely new to you, or perhaps something previously happening only infrequently. Whilst the dining table or kitchen counter may have been workable for one day a week, full time working might not be sustainable in that way….plus you might be craving some separation from work to downtime.

First things first, you need a desk. If you have any obvious tables you could utilise, great, but otherwise think about repurposing a wallpaper paste table/ trestle table or picnic table that you may have lying around in the garage or shed. If you add a cloth and some accessories you’d never even remember what’s lurking beneath. Dressing Tables could be repurposed as desks and mini kids tables make great little desks.

For kids now facing the prospect of home learning for the foreseeable future, giving them a little space to call their own I have found to be really motivational and helpful in getting them to engage in a task. I wanted to create a workspace away from their bedroom sleep zone and so I scoured the ground floor near the hub of our home (our kitchen) so that I could keep a close eye on them. I kept the youngest nearest to the kitchen but still needed a space for my daughter who is in Year 2. We settled on the hallway coat cupboard as the perfect venue! I’m serious - it works on so many levels as has electricity and fitted everything she needs and more. The very best bit is that it closes away at the end of the day - result! Under the stairs spaces would work really well too or any nook with a wall against is a great start. I raided their bedrooms of Ikea small children tables which are going to be a permanent downstairs fixture now for this period.

So you have identified a space and have a desk - now what?

5 Tips to take your workspace from drab to fab

PAINT

Never underestimate the transformative power of paint! If you’ve got a half a tin of paint or two lying around from a previous project, now is the time to get it out and slap some on! I used the tiniest tester pot recently to give The House of Wolf husband’s office a lift - its incredible how far you can stretch things.

But you don’t have to go as far as painting the walls - even painting a boring white picture frame will give things a fresh look. You could experiment with some masking tape - I marked out diagonal lines on a cupboard and it quickly funked up the space.

I had some leftover magnetic chalkboard paint from our playroom and had just enough to paint the wall. I then sprayed some old magnetic letters in neon spray paint to tie the scheme together that were previously rose gold.

You could use old paint to DIY some new artwork. Lucy Tiffney has been inspiring with her collage IGTV series, or you could get your Jackson Pollock on and have fun splatting paint at random with the kids. Spray paint is quick and super easy to use and you can achieve a whole new look in no time.

I used a tiny amount of the green pain to make this super easy bespoke artwork by flicking the paint onto the paper. The Tom Dixon light fitting was originally rose gold so I sprayed in gold to tie in with the makeover

One of my absolute favourite things to do is “Shop the house” where I move stuff around, search high and low in other rooms, cupboards/ the shed/garage/ loft for items you had forgotten about or could give a new lease of life to! I found so many items that would work with the colours I’d chosen for the mini makeovers - look for books, vases/plant pots, pictures and any other accessories.

PERSONALISE

Make your workspace your own by having a few photos or trinkets around that make you smile and feel relaxed - like a typography letter - DIY this by printing a giant letter out and framing yourself.

GET CRAFTY

I made a piece of art for the HoW husand’s office renovation by gathering special and sentimental items from his life into a stacked shape and spraying in one colour. Inspired by Zoe at Muck n Brass he now gets to enjoy items that were previously locked away in a box in the loft!

This is a grouping of precious items previously hidden away in a box in the loft - enjoy seeing them everyday by stacking them and spraying in one colour. The glass dome is inexpensive from Ikea. For more Inso check out Muck N Brass

NATURE

Don’t forget the foliage! I moved around faux and real plants, plus picked a cute jam jar of pink flowers from the garden - whatever you have. Foliage or flowers will instantly lift with the space with lovely smell and calming properties

Easy Tips For Your Home This Autumn by Louise Wolfenden

If you are after an inexpensive Autumn update for your home, look no further with these hints and tips!

IMG_6131 2.jpg
  • “Shop the house” for bits and pieces that are currently in other rooms that may work with a look or colour scheme. The large orange pot as the centre piece of my tablescape usually resides in a completely different room at my house, but its the perfect rich orange for my Autumnal table. I chose to mix the orange with pink plates for a more contemporary update. Orange works so well with many bases, but if it’s not your thing then reach for the paint tester pots and customise your pumpkins in any colour that puts a smile on your face.

  • Pumpkin time - As well as the real deal, look out for quirky twists on the original pumpkin. I found these felt pumpkins in https://uk.flyingtiger.com and love the texture they bring to this table setting. Real pumpkins look amazing sprayed/ painted or carved - check out https://www.pinterest.co.uk for heaps of ideas and of course the ‘gram is loaded with pumpkin patches and colourful delights to inspire you to get creative.

2. Up-cycle - these candlesticks were originally a drab goldy colour - I got them from https://www.poundland.co.uk for yes, you’ve guessed it.. £1 a pop! For an easy peasy up-cycle, I simply got crafty with a can of https://www.rustoleum.com spray paint I had lying around in the garage. After laying the candlesticks outside on some cardboard I transformed them into a much more impactful piece that worked with my orangey tones.. in a matter of minutes. The key for hunting in cheap pound shops is looking for nice shapes - you can then change the colour to anything your heart desires if the shape has potential.

SHOP THE HOUSE!
— My top tip!
IMG_6129.jpg

I picked up a range of seasonal foliage from my local florist but you could also take your trusted secateurs and head outside for snippable branches to add to the look. Also there are so many branches, conkors, leaves and pine cones lying around at the side of public footpaths and woods right now - get collecting.. even better as it costs nothing!

I hope this has inspired you to get creative and enjoy a cosy home this Autumn!

5 Easy Tips for an Easter-ready home by Louise Wolfenden

Wow your guests this holiday with these simple yet effective styling tips for colourful and quirky Easter decor. Smiles guaranteed!

You’ve stocked up on chocolate eggs, bulk ordered the yellow fuzzy chicks and dusted off the Easter Tree.  Now it’s time to decorate with maximum impact,  here’s how:

 1.  Bring the outside in

Spring is yours for the taking, so hot-foot it outside and raid Mother Nature’s larder.

  • Forage the garden or woods for spring flowers like    Daffodils, Tulips and Hyacinth.

  • Combine three bunches for a colourful contrast and  place in two vases or little pots across a dining table.

  • Grab blossom and twigs from nearby trees and use them for a statement centre piece.

  • Place your creations in areas of your home you frequent the most, where having something striking can be fully enjoyed.

2. Mix traditional with Kitsch

Eggs are the zenith of Easter symbolism. Display them with a twist for smiles and fun.

  • Clusters of eggs dotted around, real or chocolate,  look pretty in little bowls or pots (a challenge to not scoff the lot in one sitting!)

  • Put real eggs in a wooden egg box or straw-filled bowl and decorate with some little chicks or super cute fried egg ribbon from Zazzle.

  • Use jelly fried egg sweets and dot them around the table for added colour and edible Kitsch.

  • Other fun egg motifs can be found on napkins, bunting, tea towels and crockery - a great way to introduce some kitsch to the table. Amazon has some fun stuff to choose from.

3. Get baking (or faking!)

The sight of homemade goods will instantly make guests feel welcome.

  • Quickly mix together cornflakes and melted chocolate and top with mini eggs, et voila!

  • Feeling bold? Make an Easter Simnel cake - a real crowd-pleaser!

  • Baking not your thing? No problem! Glam up shop-bought goodies by adding a little topper. Try Amazon or Cakecraftshop for a great selection.

  • Arrange your Easter treats on cake stands or under a glass cloche for maximum allure.

4. Create A Quirky and Colourful Table

Your table is the centre of your Easter celebrations - make it sing!

  • A little plant pot filled with real carrots not only looks quirky, but guests can munch away in between courses.

  • Use some fake grass to run down the centre of your table to emulate a Spring lawn. Amazon do a lovely table runner.

  • Dot the table with chocolate bunnies, eggs, rabbit figurines and Easter-inspired ornaments.

  • Try and use a Spring-hued colour theme with your glassware, china, napkins and vases.

5. Embrace the Easter Bunny

Give this little fella a firm place in your Easter celebrations.

HouseOfWolf-20190301©MatildaNorris2019199.jpg
  • Explore some “grown-up”options. Layered Lounge have some lovely figurines and Homesense has a good selection too.

  • Show your fun side with an Easter Bunny print on napkins, place mats or tea towels.

  • If you’re hosting children, use bunnies to make their place setting extra cute (I chopped up a string of bunny bunting to make individual place settings, which the children can then play with while they await their food).

  • Molly Meg do some fab Easter Bunny decorations for children, including a Bunny Piñata, Easter Bunny table crackers and Bunny Confetti. Of course you can never go wrong with a trip to Flying Tiger either.

Sending all good wishes for a fun and fabulous Easter!
